OPA’s SWT/CC Team has two new resource pages for our categories—one for the Summer Work Travel (SWT) program and one for the Camp Counselor (CC) program. We believe these sites would be a great help to exchange visitors considering applying for the EVP, for EVs preparing for their future programs, and for those currently on program. Attached are drafts of the website pages, along with copies of various documents that we would like to see incorporated within them. I based the content of both drafts on OPA’s Au Pair, Intern and Trainee, and AG pages that are currently live on…

I rarely had a dull moment, and my friends would often ask me, “Are you even interning?!” because of all the cultural activities and traveling I did. I promise I was! But I utilized every second of my free time to go somewhere new and do something fun. I made it a priority to visit every New York City borough and explore every neighborhood of Manhattan. The Best Life Experience

By Xiaowen Niu, J-1 Summer Work Travel participant from China The J-1 Summer Work and Travel Program has been the best life experience I‘ve ever had. U.S. Embassies Engage J-1 Participants to Strengthen Relations

     Posted on: March 24, 2016

The State Department is serious about relationship building with our exchange participants. That’s why we support alumni networks around the world. Recently, many of our embassies have increased efforts to engage participants from J-1 privately-funded jexchanges, so that the investment participants have made in their futures can be leveraged through association with other participants. We are excited to include these participants in our long-term alumni networks and outreach, and have seen much interest from participants to stay in touch with our embassies overseas. Today, I’d like to share a successful alumni engagement effort by the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava, Slovakia.…

In Florida, Au Pair Cultural Activities Are A-maze-ing

Learning about American culture and building life-long memories is at the heart of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, including for au pairs. Au pair program sponsors facilitate monthly meet-ups, where local and regional coordinators engage au pairs in cultural events, such as city tours, holiday celebrations, sporting events, volunteer activities, and many others. Here is an example of one such activity that took place in Jacksonville, Florida: Last Fall, a group of au pairs joined their Area Director at Amazing Grace Crop Maze for their monthly activity and outing. Au pairs from Sweden and South Africa enjoyed a day winding…

Relationship Building: The Heart of International Exchanges

“International exchanges – especially those for young people taking the first steps of their professional lives – are strong and life changing experiences. It’s important to keep the international connections you make during an exchange alive because they have a powerful impact on your life, as well as others. Let’s face it, at the heart of it, international exchanges are about the relationships you make and maintain.” This is one of the messages that I emphasized during my keynote address at the 69th annual International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) Conference in Prague. In the spirit of the season, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the accomplishments of the Exchange Visitor Program over the past year. We’ve seen community groups embrace and expand the reach of the program. We’ve worked with over 1,420 sponsors (for-profit, non-profit, federal, state, and local government entities) to create the best possible experiences for participants. We’ve built new networks with leaders of other countries to strengthen important bilateral relationships and…

The Whole Shebang for Camp Counselors in Pennsylvania

     Posted on: November 27, 2015

As the cold settles in here in Washington, D.C. and the Northeastern United States, I want to revisit summer. My colleague Travis Parsley made a visit to Wayne County, Pennsylvania, during summer camp season. I will let Travis take it from here. Enjoy. “It’s the whole shebang!” That’s precisely how Lathaniel Dyer, a J-1 camp counselor from the United Kingdom, described his feelings about Camp Summit. I thought that was a strange response, until I spent some time at the simultaneously tranquil and high octane camps in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. J-1 camp counselors have to dial up the enthusiasm to…

J-1 Volunteers Get Inspired by the 2015 NYC Marathon Experience

     Posted on: November 5, 2015

Who needs water? During last Sunday’s grueling New York City Marathon almost EVERYONE needed water, and – especially between mile markers 17 and 22 – there was a good chance the smiling person with the extended hand offering water and Gatorade was a J-1 Exchange Visitor. Many of my U.S. State Department colleagues, including staff from our ECA New York Program Branch, had a unique opportunity to join nearly 870 J-1 Exchange Visitors, from 15 different program categories, as they volunteered at the annual New York City Marathon. The State Department J-1 team was part of more than 10,000 volunteers…

Among the 10,000 volunteers helping out at the world’s largest marathon on Sunday, you will find more than 850 of our J-1 participants. Experiencing the American tradition of volunteerism first hand, they will distribute water, cheer on athletes from their home countries, and share their cultures with their fellow volunteers and the runners.…

Young people always dream about what they will be when they grow up. Will they bring about world peace? Will they end poverty? Will they win an Oscar for their moving documentary? Will they invent the next big thing that radically changes technology? Here in the J-1 world, we jump out of our seats and cheer each time the J-1 internship program brings those young dreamers closer to their life-changing goals. It is a noisy place around here. I took Route J-1 to California’s Silicon Valley recently, where the world’s most innovative tech companies are hosting J-1 interns and turning dreams…

A Few Things to Know About Our J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program

This week, I wrote a State Department blog outlining a few things you should know about the J-1 Visa program, in hope of reaching a larger audience. While the program is well known abroad and to the readers of Route J-1, many Americans are unaware of the amazing work being done by J-1 participants. So, how much do you know about our J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Program? Check out the full blog for answers to these questions and more: How likely is it that an American has been impacted by the J-1 program? Why do international students tell us they…

J-1 Exchange Visitor Program in the Outer Banks

     Posted on: October 1, 2015

Autumn begins this week, and with the change in seasons we have closed out our concentrated summer monitoring and travel for 2015. Route J-1 will continue, of course, so keep checking in. I want to close out summer 2015 with a report from the Outer Banks of North Carolina (OBX for short), a popular summer destination for Washingtonians and those from the North Carolina Research Triangle. OBX’s natural sandy beaches stretch for miles and miles, and offer a beautiful place to reconnect with family and forget about work. Part of the reason OBX is such a wonderful experience is the…

Building Bridges with Cuba

     Posted on: September 17, 2015

Last week we held a symposium at George Washington University, here in Washington, D.C. on “Building Bridges: Strengthening Educational & Citizen Exchange Linkages,” following the opening of official diplomatic relations with Cuba. The idea was to bring together those who work with exchange programs to discuss our new U.S. approach on engaging people-to-people with Cuba – of which J-1 plays an integral role. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan wrote about the symposium, and I’d like to share some of her thoughts. As I said at the symposium, these are the relationships that will drive…

Take Me Out to the Ballgame: J-1 Participants Experience America’s Pastime at Nationals Park

     Posted on: August 31, 2015

Recently, my colleagues Ethan Bursofsky and Julia Saltzman joined more than 200 J-1 lifeguards, their sponsor, and host employer representatives at a Washington Nationals game to experience a great American pastime: baseball. Baseball is deeply rooted in U.S. culture, and has a unique place in American history. For many D.C. residents, a summer Nat’s game is a season staple. Yet for the J-1 participants that attended the Washington Nationals game against the New York Mets on a recent summer evening, almost everything about the game was new. Peter, a lifeguard from Bulgaria said he had never seen a stadium as…

Summer Work Travel Exchange Visitors Bring International Flavor to the Yellowstone National Park

     Posted on: August 20, 2015

In addition to the rodeo, my colleagues Stacey Gomelsky and Nadine Zaatar also made their way to Yellowstone National Park, the second leg of their tour of Wyoming. You can read about their visits with J-1 exchange visitors at this famous and historic location. You have likely heard of the unparalleled scenic views of the Yellowstone National Park that span three western states and more than 3,400 square miles (that is the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined!).  Yellowstone is home to the “Old Faithful” natural geyser, a famous geological marvel and a star attraction at our nation’s oldest…

J-1 Exchange Visitors Experience a Legendary Western Tradition – the Rodeo

     Posted on: August 18, 2015

Earlier this summer, my colleagues Stacey Gomelsky and Nadine Zaatar traveled to Wyoming, where they attended a rodeo event with J-1 participants.  You can read all about it below. Wyoming is a state best known for its diverse ecosystems of scenic mountain ranges interspersed with sparkling rivers and alpine lakes, vast green landscapes stretching to the horizon, free-ranging herds of bison, and frequent human encounters with bears.  Wyoming is also known for its enduring “Western spirit,” which for Americans summons images of pioneers heading across the open range into the new frontier of early America. A group of 25 Summer…

Scholarship Programs Make Dreams into Realities for Participants

     Posted on: August 10, 2015

J-1 Exchange Visitor Programs leave a lasting impression on both participants and host communities. I see it everywhere I go. This year, I was excited to meet four amazing participants who have dreamed of building their skills in the United States, but needed some assistance to make their dreams a reality. Through an innovative new program developed by their sponsor, these four received scholarships to participate in the SWT program – and are now excelling in their respective placements. The scholarship idea was a way to support stellar participants from countries that have historically lower participant levels in the program.…

Celebrating J-Day 2015: Eat. Play. Give.

     Posted on: August 4, 2015

For the past few years, a number of sponsors across the country, in partnership with the Alliance, have encouraged their participants to take a whole day – or even a few hours – and participate in something bigger than all of us, giving back while having fun. Called, “J Day”, it has become a tradition, and is a part of the broader emphasis on cultural activities within the Summer Work Travel program. Yesterday, people across the country used the hashtags #CelebrateJDay and #eatplaygive and showed us some of the amazing ways J-1 participants impact U.S. communities. 10,152 meals packaged! Thank…

J-1 Trainees Get a Professional Start in the White Mountains

As I wrote from Florida, I am on the lookout for J-1s wherever I go this summer. While up in New England visiting family last week, I made my way to the iconic Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. A living history book, it opened in 1902 as a luxury summer residence for wealthy city dwellers who were carried by train almost straight to the hotel doors. Nestled in the White Mountains, it is a popular destination for hikers, as well as ghost hunters, international monetary policy wonks, and J-1 Summer Work Travelers and Trainees. Diego Fernando López de…

In Shenandoah National Park, Hosting J-1 Participants is a Privilege

     Posted on: July 21, 2015

Last week, my colleague Grace Cho joined me for a visit to the Shenandoah National Park and wrote about our visit below. Happy reading! Shenandoah National Park is a truly breathtaking terrain nestled in the heart of the Virginia Appalachians.  Established in 1935, it welcomes approximately 1.2 million visitors annually, who come to explore its mountain landscape, lush forests, and waterfalls. Travelers journey from the world over to find refreshment – and quaint and rustic lodging – at Shenandoah’s Skyland Resort and Big Meadows Lodge. Some of those world travelers are J-1 Interns and Summer Work Travel participants.  Last week,…

Au Pairs Help Package Meals for Children in Need

The Fourth of July, U.S. Independence Day, is quite often the highlight of the J-1 summer, and the holiday leaves a strong impression on our visitors. We love to hear stories of participants being invited to experience the diverse ways in which Americans celebrate this important holiday.  This year, we asked our Summer Work Travel and Camp Counselor sponsors to share some of their favorite Fourth of July moments.  Below is a montage of some of them. These photos illustrate the cultural exchange that happens in neighborhoods all across the country, thanks to the phenomenal exchange visitors and support by…

Block Island: A Welcoming and Supportive Community for J-1 Exchange Visitors

     Posted on: July 2, 2015

In this post, my State Department colleague, Nadine Zaatar, describes her recent visit to Block Island, RI, where she met with the local community and J-1 exchange visitors. J-1 Summer Work Travel participants are lucky to call Block Island home. A truly picturesque isle off the coast of Rhode Island, Block Island is home to over 200 Summer Work Travel (SWT) participants from 19 countries each summer. Block Island also happens to be the home of a volunteer community group with the mission of embracing these participants who help keep the island running during the busiest season. I met with…

J-1 Orienteering

     Posted on: June 30, 2015

As you read this, J-1 SWT participants are landing in airports across the United States and heading to their summer destinations. Some are with friends, some on their own--all with unique expectations. I often remark about how ambitious, outgoing, and ready these students are for adventure. However, I want to see them coming on the program fully prepared for what lies ahead. I know from my own overseas experiences that flying across the world for a brand new experience without proper preparation and expectation-setting can bring on a strong case of nerves, even for the most seasoned traveler. Post-arrival orientations…

Home is What Lasts in Your Heart: Camp Homeward Bound

     Posted on: June 24, 2015

I loved being up in New York to kick off  the second summer Route J-1 roadtrip. After a day of inspiration at Liberty Island, I headed upstate to Bear Mountain, NY.  Just an hour or so outside of the Big Apple, and you are in pristine nature. Since 1984, this beautiful place has been the home of a special camp called, Camp Homeward Bound. Created by the Coalition for the Homeless, CHB is the nation’s first summer sleep-away camp designed specifically for homeless kids in the New York shelter system.  Camp director, Beverly McEntarfer, told me that nearly 40 percent…

A Summer of Being

     Posted on: June 23, 2015

It is now officially summer! This means that I have packed my bags and am hitting Route J-1 for a summer road trip once again.  My staff will be joining in the adventure, and we look forward to showcasing the extraordinary J-1 participants who will make the United States their home this summer.  Like last year, I decided to kick off the summer version of my road trip in New York City. For young people, New York evokes a desire to dream big, so it is the perfect place to start.  For the past 130 years, a special lady has been…

Remembering the Irish Students

     Posted on: June 17, 2015

I was about to post a new blog from New York City kicking off my 2015 Route J-1 summer road trip, but that will have to wait. Today, we are all taking a moment to pay tribute to the Irish J-1 students who lost their lives, and those who were critically injured, when a balcony collapsed in Berkeley, California yesterday. The positive impact of the J-1 Summer Work Travel program on Irish society is simply a fact. I know this firsthand. Last year, I posted a State Department blog post from Dublin, where I met alumni from many generations whose…

U.S.-Mexico MOU Internship Program Study Tour to Mexico

     Posted on: June 15, 2015

The U.S.-Mexico Internship Exchange Program – as chronicled in previous posts (see Mexico MOU Signing Ceremony) – is a central pillar in the bilateral strategy to vastly increase two-way exchanges between our countries. The strength of our relationship and the excitement on both sides of the border to increase cooperation on exchanges encouraged us to try something new. We worked closely with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, and their academic and government partners to arrange a study tour for interested J-1 designated intern sponsors to visit Mexico City and Puebla, Mexico. Our goal…

EVP Teachers Making Connections in La Nouvelle-Orléans

French Class Poster, Haynes Academy of Advanced Studies, New Orleans, Louisiana The French influence in New Orleans, Louisiana is world-renowned. The cuisine, music, and architecture reflect the city’s roots and rich multicultural heritage. And, thanks to some very dedicated teachers who are in the United States as part of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, French and American youth have the unique opportunity to further explore each other’s culture online and in-person. Ms. Maiwena Gadegbeku, an English and drama teacher from France’s Brittany region, is a dynamo of energy, creativity, and cultural exchange. I saw her in action at Haynes Academy…

From Letter of Intent to Memorandum of Understanding: Ever More Exchange Opportunities Between the United States and Mexico

     Posted on: March 26, 2015

On Monday, March 16, Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan and Under Secretary for North American Affairs for the Government of Mexico, Sergio Alcocer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to officially establish the J-1 U.S.-Mexico Internship Exchange Program. This historic event follows the signing of the letter of intent to create the program on January 5, which was featured in my blog earlier this year. It was an incredible honor to welcome over 60 representatives of the U.S. Department of State, the Government of Mexico, bilateral organizations, J-1 internship sponsors, private corporations, and current Mexican J-1…

Going West 5 Years Strong

     Posted on: January 26, 2015

As we showed in my last post, J-1 exchanges play an important role in building good will and strengthening important bilateral relationships. The United States and the Republic of Korea, two strong allies, have had an international exchange partnership since 2008 through Korea WEST (Work, English, Study, and Travel). Through a system of recruitment in Korea and implementation in the United States, the WEST program offers Korean university students English language training and professional internships through J-1 designated sponsors. In the spirit of reciprocity, American students participate in internships in Korea through the Korean Working Holiday Program. During my trip…

The Grand Multiplier: Distance Learning Connects J-1 Trainee with American Students

     Posted on: December 30, 2014

Earlier this year, I met Gaby Olimon, a wildlife biologist and J-1 Trainee from Ensenada, Mexico, at Grand Canyon National Park. In addition to her on-the-ground training to run wildlife protection and educational programs at the park,Grand Canyon’s distance learning program allows Gaby to multiply her experience by connecting with classrooms around the United States. During the last academic year, the program reached 4,078 students from California to New Jersey in 26 different states. Gaby spent the past year uniquely contributing to the Canyon's distance learning by conducting educational programs in Spanish. By combining lessons about wildlife preservation with reinforcement of language skills, Gaby allows Grand Canyon's…

Assistant Secretary Evan Ryan Meets with J-1 Interns and Trainees in New York City

     Posted on: November 20, 2014

Earlier this fall, 15 J-1 interns and trainees gathered inside the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York City to meet with my boss, Assistant Secretary Evan Ryan.  As Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, she oversees all U.S. exchange programs, and she has made it her goal to meet as many international exchange visitors as possible.  She recorded her impressions of their experiences in the post below. One of the greatest benefits of my job is getting to know exchange visitors from around the world.  I have heard incredible life stories and grand…

Tour of the University of Wisconsin-Madison

     Posted on: October 28, 2014

Are you a current or hopeful J-1 exchange visitor interested in attending a university in the United States, or even just visiting a campus?  Many J-1 designated sponsors arrange campus visits to U.S. universities for exchange visitors on their programs.  Whether or not you dream of studying here, your proximity to an American university campus offers a really fun opportunity.  My colleague, Deb Shetler, took a campus tour in Madison, Wisconsin with a group of Summer Work Travel (SWT) students this summer doing just that.  Posting this story gives me the chance to highlight a wonderful State Department resource called…

J-1 Connect

     Posted on: October 14, 2014

J-1 exchanges have had a lasting influence on Irish society.  As highlighted in my post in the State Department’s official blog, Irish officials estimate that some 150,000 Irish citizens have participated in J-1 programs since the Exchange Visitor Program officially began.  The net result is a group of influential members of Irish society across a broad range of sectors, including government, academics, arts, culture, sports and business, that all have a very special connection to the United States.  This is definitely something to celebrate so I am pleased to report we did just that. Two weeks ago, I joined the…

INTELligent Diplomacy

     Posted on: September 23, 2014

What do you get when you cross semiconductor chips with American cultural diplomacy? Thirty engineers from China and the Philippines joining their American supervisors in some good old fashioned back to school volunteerism! I visited Phoenix during the third leg of this summer’s Route J1, and stopped in at Intel to join their international trainees in a corporate volunteer activity. Intel is a long-standing J-1 Intern and Trainee host, and they have challenged themselves to create robust and diverse cultural offerings for their J-1 trainees. The Intel training program draws from individuals working at their locations in other countries. Through the J-1 Exchange…

Employee of the Quarter!

     Posted on: September 17, 2014

I could not leave Sedona without introducing you to Richmond, a culinary intern from the Philippines who is training at Enchantment Resort. Much like Kosta Cvoro, the student I profiled in my last post, Richmond is excelling in his training at Enchantment. I know this because he was just awarded Employee of the Quarter! He was nominated by the resort's executive chef, sous chef, and just about everybody he worked with, it seems. This young man has made quite an impression here! Richmond first studied management then decided to go to culinary school. During his internship, he rotated every three…

Enchanted with Arizona

     Posted on: September 9, 2014

After a few stunning days at Grand Canyon National Park, I headed for Sedona, Arizona. It was so hard to leave the awesome beauty of Grand Canyon, so I was thankful to be heading nearby to Sedona to enjoy the spectacular red rocks before ending this leg of Route J-1. Enchantment Resort in Sedona has hosted J-1 Summer Work Travel students for many years. With a full staff of about 500 American employees, they hosted around 20 international students in the Summer Work Travel program this summer, and two culinary interns. I went to have a firsthand look at how…

Accolades on the Rim

     Posted on: September 4, 2014

There are times when certain individuals capture your heart and inspire you. Two young J-1 Summer Work Travel (SWT) participants I recently met at Grand Canyon National Park showed me – in living color – what a can-do, entrepreneurial spirit really looks like, and how lucky we are that such motivated and impressive individuals regularly choose to take part in J-1 programs. Eliada Miron is an extraordinary young woman from Romania who spent this summer working in the reception department at the Yavapai Lodge. I had the privilege of spending some one-on-one time with Eliada and it only took a…

A Grand Experience

     Posted on: September 2, 2014

As I mentioned in my post from Rocky Mountain National Park, our national parks are a true treasure of this country.  I had the wonderful opportunity to visit one of the most famous and widely visited parks - Grand Canyon National Park.  Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.  This amazing gorge was created through tectonic uplift, erosion, and other natural phenomena - exposing stone half the age of the earth! I also learned that only 5 percent of visitors to the Canyon ever go below the rim. My source for this interesting fact and…

J-1 Cafe

     Posted on: August 29, 2014

Through Route J-1, we have spotlighted many local community groups and homegrown efforts to embrace the diversity student visitors bring. As we showed in Ocean City, Maryland and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, local community support enriches students’ understanding of American culture, and makes a lasting impact in the lives of those exchange visitors. In this post, my colleague, Michael James, shares his experience during a recent visit to the Virginia Beach Community Chapel’s “J-1 Café”. J-1 students line up for a delicious dinner donated and served by the local community. J-1 Cafe Every Tuesday night during the summer, the Virginia Beach…

Fudge Versus History

     Posted on: August 29, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Nadine Zaatar, shares her experience during a recent visit to Mackinac Island. If you had to choose between working at a fudge restaurant or at a historical landmark, which would you choose?  For the several hundred participants placed in Mackinac Island, this is the exact conundrum they faced when deciding on the direction of their Summer Work Travel (SWT) program.  I guess the main question one has to ask their self is, “Do I have the self-discipline to avoid eating the tasty samples all day?” J-1 SWT participant Danilo Babic (Serbia) makes fudge in front…

Celebrating J-Day: Lifeguard Olympics

     Posted on: August 21, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Jennifer Nupp, shares her experience during a recent visit to Fairfax, Virginia. J-Day is a day when J-1 visa participants come together in their communities around the U.S. to celebrate and share cultural diversity and American customs.  In commemoration of J-Day, the sponsor this August hosted its sixth annual “Lifeguard Olympics” held at the Brandywine Swim Club in Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC.  The sponsor hosts this popular event near the end of the summer season for student J-visa holders working as lifeguards in the Washington metropolitan area as a thank you to…

Volunteers Multiplied

     Posted on: August 19, 2014

We regularly talk about the public diplomacy “multiplier effect” achieved through J-1 exchange programs. Exchange programs connect people around the world and link people through common interests, values, and passions. While U.S. designated exchange organizations - sponsors - implement individual programs, the State Department oversees the overall functioning of the Exchange Visitor Program and how sponsors conduct their individual programs. We ensure that the goals we seek to achieve through public diplomacy are fulfilled through J-1 sponsored exchanges. Route J-1 has allowed me to see for myself how that is happening in the area of volunteerism, a major focus area…

The Rhode Island State House

     Posted on: August 14, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Deb Shetler, shares her experience during a recent visit to Rhode Island. Earlier this month, eight Summer Work Travel (SWT) participants had the privilege of meeting with the Governor of Rhode Island and touring the impressive marble state building as part of a cultural event organized by their sponsor organization. Afterwards, the participants were able to learn more about Governor Chafee’s background and some fun facts about the state of Rhode Island including the historic State House.  Did you know, for example, that Rhode Island is the smallest state in the entire country, yet has…

Celebrating Mandela Day on Mackinac Island

     Posted on: August 12, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Nadine Zaatar, shares her experience during a recent visit to Mackinac Island, Michigan on Mandela Day: For 67 years, Nelson Mandela devoted his life to his people and humanity with the belief that each individual has the ability to make an impact. To commemorate his years of service and values, a celebration held each year on Mandela’s birthday, July 18, serves as a day to thank Mandela for his contributions to the world. In 2009, the United Nations declared that day Mandela Day – an International day of service associated with Mandela’s years of service…

A Delicious Experience in Lake Tahoe

     Posted on: August 11, 2014

My last stop on the second leg of Route J-1 was Lake Tahoe, CA. Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States and it spans both Nevada and California. Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that if Lake Tahoe were poured over the state of California, it would still be 14 inches deep? Lake Tahoe’s initial attraction to hearty souls was its gold and timber resources; however, it’s now famous for skiing, hiking, and 274 days of sunshine each year. With this in mind, I joined a group of J-1 Summer Work Travel students for a…

J-1 Students Rock!

     Posted on: August 5, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Deb Shetler, shares her experience during her recent trip to South Dakota. Last week, my colleague Yupa and I had the pleasure of getting to know sixteen J-1 international students placed at South Dakota's Custer State Park Resort as they participated in a community service activity. These energetic students spent a day supporting the state park in its effort to build a new amphitheater. Following a short presentation by the park ranger, the students spent several hours carrying rocks and stones away in heavy buckets – it was hard work and very different than the…

The Rocky Mountain Intercontinental Connect

     Posted on: August 1, 2014

I just visited Estes Park, Colorado, a beautiful little town that is the starting point for one of the best road trips in the U.S. – Trail Ridge Road. Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuously paved road in the United States, reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet.  My Route J-1 road trip would not be complete without paying homage to this famous route, and the national park that hosts it, Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The peaks, which reach the skies, are part of the Continental Divide that starts in Canada and ends in Mexico. This international geological wonder…

A Real Life Fairy Tale

     Posted on: August 1, 2014

Route J-1 took me on an adventure to a faraway land where Robin Hood really exists – about two hours south of St. Louis! I visited Sherwood Forest Camp near Lesterville, Missouri to see some counselors in action at J-1’s Camp Counselor program. Sherwood Forest camp is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the summer camp experience to young people with few financial means. Mary Rogers, the Executive Director, was a camper herself who grew up with a single mom in St. Louis who struggled financially.  She credits Sherwood Forest with much of her success in life such as graduating…

It’s Fun to Stay at the Y-M-C-A!

     Posted on: July 30, 2014

I spent my childhood attending YMCA after-school programs and YMCA summer camps, but I had never seen a “Y”, as they are sometimes called, quite like the one I recently visited on Route J-1. The YMCA of the Rockies is nestled next to Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, Colorado. It is a family-friendly resort that is not only famous for its brand of recreation and proximity to world class hiking, but also for its J-1 staff who come from almost every continent. I visited the Y of the Rockies’ annual international fair where their J-1 interns, trainees, and…

Summer of Chocolate

     Posted on: July 28, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Molly Dillon, shares her experience during her recent trip to San Francisco. How does spending your summer surrounded by delicious chocolate, the breezy Pacific, and the bustling city of San Francisco sound? For Ecaterina, a Summer Work Travel participant from Romania, that sounded like the perfect way to spend a few months of her summer break. Ecaterina lives within walking distance of the Original Ghirardelli Chocolate Manufactory, which makes for an easy and enjoyable commute to work. Being surrounded by chocolate five times a week is tempting, so the walk to work also comes in handy…

Good Neighbors

     Posted on: July 24, 2014

Before I say goodbye to Ashby, I want to highlight a few participants from relatively nearby who came to participate in the J1 internship program.  Although they traveled a shorter distance (by hours) than others; their countries may have the most to gain from their participation. I can think of no better term to describe my new friend, Virginia, from El Salvador than, “she’s got it.” This young woman will share her energy and spirit with you freely and she seemed to be a very focused and determined young woman.  She studied agronomy at her university in El Salvador and…

International Interns and Trainees Mix It Up in Minnesota

     Posted on: July 24, 2014

Greetings from Ashby, Minnesota (population = 456). The people in this scenic small town in the Minnesota lakes district will give you a huge hug and welcome you home for supper. I came here to celebrate “Ashby Appreciation Day” with town residents and J-1 international interns and trainees from Brazil, Ukraine, Haiti, El Salvador, Mexico, Georgia, Moldova, Germany, and Switzerland. One of our sponsors brilliantly took advantage of the celebration and organized a weekend festival for their students to simultaneously introduce them to local residents. It was a sweet mix! The local residents and international trainees competed together and cheered…

Embarking on Leg Two of Route J-1

     Posted on: July 22, 2014

I just returned home from the beach leg of Route J-1 and have my bag packed for the mid-west and western leg. I have swapped my sundresses for jeans and my sandals for hiking shoes as I am looking forward to farms, lakes and mountains. As a proud west coaster now living on the east coast, I don’t get to the central states nearly enough. I look forward to this exploration and to seeing new places through the eyes of J-1 exchange visitors. On this leg, I will visit interns, trainees, camp counselors and more summer work students. Every region…

Volunteers Make J-1 Students Feel Welcome in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

     Posted on: July 21, 2014

Much like how the Ocean City, Maryland community embraces their J-1 student visitors, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware also goes to great lengths to make students feel welcome, safe, and appreciated. Recently, I attended a lively dinner with some 250 international students and 20-30 community volunteers at the Epworth church in Rehoboth Beach. Rather than being a one-off, special event, the Rehoboth community churches of varying denominations hold these J-1 dedicated dinners for students four nights a week! This arrangement driven by the faith communities provides students with many dining options, and plenty of free meals. And, of course, all are welcomed,…

Ocean City Special

     Posted on: July 17, 2014

Ocean City, Maryland is a popular Atlantic seaside town with a long and rich history of tourism that I was unaware of until my visit to this thriving shore town. For instance, I just learned that the first paying vacationers to Ocean City can be traced back to 1869! Today, Ocean City – or OC, as the locals and regular visitors often call it – witnesses a summer-time population boom of some 350,000 people! In addition to its popularity with beachgoers, the town is one of the most popular destinations for J-1 Visa Summer Work Travel students. After spending a…

International Students and the Jewel of the Susquehanna

     Posted on: July 15, 2014

In this post, my colleague, Nicole Deaner, shares her experience after attending a cultural program in Pennsylvania over the weekend where many J1 participants visit and work. This weekend I had the pleasure of visiting Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – a gem of a city nestled on the banks of the Susquehanna River and host to hundreds of international exchange students.  Harrisburg has a long and vibrant history of settlement and has served as a center of commerce and transportation. For centuries, it has welcomed people from many different origins and that still holds true today. I met with international students from…

It Takes a Village!

What exactly does it take to make sure 80,000 foreign university students visiting seasonal tourist spots across the country have a safe and high quality experience? For starters, a welcoming community with host employers that go the extra mile. Today, I want to spotlight two host employers in Nantucket, Massachusetts, but first let me share some nice-to-know information. According to the Nantucket Historical Association, Nantucket means “faraway island” in the language of the Wampanoag tribe who first inhabited the island. Nantucket is as quaint and charming as it is remote and rugged in places. It holds an important place in…
