This past July, Summer Work Travel participant host employer High Sierra Pools, held its Annual Lifeguard Olympics. Bringing together High Sierra Pools’ summer lifeguards from all over the east coast, competitors engaged in traditional relays mixed in with an air mattress race and silly dive contest. A traditional “lighting of the torch” and ceremonial naming of countries helped celebrate the diversity of the lifeguard staff that encompasses Summer Work Travel participants from Jamaica all the way to the Czech Republic.
Another Lifeguard Olympics event hosted by Premier Aquatics in early August included nearly 75 Summer Work Travel participants and incorporated a volunteer food drive orchestrated by program sponsor CCI Greenheart. CCI Greenheart encourages its program participants to engage in cross cultural exchange through community service. Participants transported food items to a nearby food bank to help feed needy families in the DC area. Exchange visitors enjoyed the “Olympic” competition, and giving back to their host community.
